Musicians shaping the future of jazz (Downbeat)
SHABAKA HUTCHINGS saxophone, clarinet EMPTY RAINS tuba THEON CROSS percussion EDDIE HICK percussion
Do not be fooled by this somewhat unusual constellation of instruments. Sons of Kemet plays an explosive mix of Caribbean folk music and jazz, with frontman Shabaka Hutchings standing with one foot in the Western tradition and one foot in Barbados. Along the way, Hutchings has been described as the future of jazz by Downbeat and won the MOBO Award for 'Best Jazz Act'. Sons of Kemet is modern British jazz with links to both Charles Mingus and Pharaoh Sanders, but the sound image is fused with grime, soca, afrobeat and dub. The group has challenged the world with hybrid jazz since 2011, now it's finally our turn to get them on stage.
