ARILD ANDERSEN bass MARIUS NESET saxophone HELGE LIEN piano HÅKON MJÅSET JOHANSEN drums

After two fantastic concerts at Norwegian festivals in 2018, Arild Andersen wanted to continue working with this ensemble and the material. With him in the Arild Andersen Group, he has some of his absolute favorites from the younger generation. The band delivered a terrific concert at Bergen Jazzforum in the autumn of 2019, and in the spring the quartet will return to Nattjazz.

Marius Neset has made a stellar career both as a saxophonist and composer, with several works for large ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta, KORK and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, in addition to extensive touring with his quintet. His unique playing style quickly changes from tight and rhythmically complex to soft and deeply beautiful. Helge Lien's delicate piano playing, which draws inspiration from Bill Evans' lyrical details, Keith Jarrett's ingenuity and Brad Mehldau's subtle expression, has given him a lot of attention both here at home and internationally. In addition, he has released nine albums with the renowned Helge Lien Trio. Håkon Mjåset Johansen is one of Norway's busiest and most used drummers, and is perhaps best known through his many years of collaboration with Come Shine, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Bugge Wesseltoft and Motif.

From stylistic pioneering work with Jan Garbarek in the 60s, via the role of house bassist at ECM, to pop star status with folk music fusion in the 90s. And in between, Arild Andersen founded Masqualero - perhaps the biggest superband Norwegian jazz life has ever experienced, and has played with Bill Frisell, Stan Getz, John Scofield and Pat Metheny, among others. He has released 22 albums under his own name on ECM, their discography being a living part of jazz history. But above all, he is rooted in the present, and his great joy of playing is combined with an exquisite technique. In addition, he is of course also a fantastic composer, and most of the repertoire in Arild Andersen Group consists of songs from his own rich catalog.
